Study and Investigation of Evaporation and Wind Drift Losses in Sprinkler Irrigation Systems

Research Project: “Study and Investigation of Evaporation and Wind Drift Losses in Sprinkler Irrigation Systems” was conducted under an agreement between the University of Kurdistan and the Center for International Scientific Studies and Collaborations, led by Dr. Isa Maroufpour.

Losses due to evaporation and wind drift (WDEL) are key factors in reducing the efficiency of sprinkler irrigation systems. Under certain conditions, up to half of the irrigation water may evaporate or be blown outside the target area before reaching the ground surface. This research aimed to develop a novel equation for estimating WDEL based on dimensional analysis and Buckingham’s π theorem, considering a wide range of technical and meteorological variables. Furthermore, this equation is applicable to various types of sprinklers and different climatic conditions.

To this end, laboratory data collected from previous studies in northeastern Spain and northwestern Iran were used. The dataset included 153 WDEL observations under diverse conditions of operating pressure, nozzle diameter, irrigation duration, day/night irrigation, nozzle height above the soil surface, and weather variations. Experiments were conducted on fixed classic systems and moving lateral pipes, using impact, gear-driven, and rotating plate sprinklers.

The final equation consisted of four technical variables (main nozzle diameter, auxiliary nozzle diameter, operating pressure, and nozzle height) and four meteorological variables (air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation). This equation provided greater accuracy in estimating losses compared to existing relationships in the scientific literature. To validate the model, 70% of the data were used for calibration and 30% for validation. Applying the equation to all available data yielded a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.81 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.49%. CERN is the world’s largest nuclear physics research center. It was established in 1954 by twelve European countries on the Franco–Swiss border. The numerous awards received by scientists and researchers working at this prestigious international scientific center—including six Nobel Prizes—demonstrate CERN’s significance in global scientific exchange.

The Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM), as Iran’s representative, began its collaboration with CERN in 2000 through the implementation of a research project. In order to expand cooperation with CERN, the Center—acting as the secretariat—prepared, in 2019, a guideline for supporting universities and research institutes with the potential to collaborate with CERN. This guideline was formally communicated to universities by the Minister of Science, Research and Technology.

Simorgh Visiting Scholars Program

The program initiated in 2010 provides travel grants to foreign scholars for visiting Iran, through which the latest science and technology findings would be shared first hand with Iranian universities, within and off the capital.

The program, initiated in 2010, aims to attract overseas outstanding scientists and experts in various fields of science and technology deliver talk at an academic event in Iran through which the latest science and technology findings would be shared first hand with Iranian universities, within and off the capital. The purpose of the so-called Simorgh program is to provide opportunities for the faculty members and students at Iranian universities to enhance their research and training through establishing ties with foreign scholars. The distinctive feature of the program is the requirement for organizing academic events in one or more universities outside Tehran, preferably in the less developed cities across the country.

In order to expand the scope of support for international projects, the Center has designed a support initiative titled the Inquiries Program. This program supports comparative, fundamental, and analytical studies on topics with an international dimension.

Under this program, applicants may conduct the study individually or in collaboration with domestic or international partners. The primary requirement for supporting proposals in this research program is the international nature of the proposed topic.
